The piece explores the concept of lucid dreaming, the sleep state in which we become aware we are dreaming and have the ability to control the dream and gain agency over our thoughts and desires. We are testing reality: Are we awake?

We wanted to play with the surreal nature of dreams and explore concepts and ideas related to our notion of a digital self in a collective environment. Being awake, conscious… agency. The installation uses the language of escape rooms to explore the dreamworld, opening doors to mirrored landscapes, waterfalls, a Daliesque world or hidden pathways, creating connection between allegories of tales, micro and macro, nature, body, mind and universe, all connected by chance and sometimes astonishing clarity. Dreams are the starting point of the imagination. The original score takes you to interactive soundscapes created specifically for the piece.

Using cutting-edge multimedia technology to produce creative environments, through mapping, infinite space, augmented reality, interactivity, video art, music and animation, the audience is invited to actively participate as actors and not just as mere spectators. The video installation art becomes a theatrical stage where things appear, move across, and then disappear, where awareness becomes attention and action, and your brain fantasizes your conscious reality. Original music uses textures, pads, pulses and drum rhythms to move the audience through the space and at times influence the music by their physical movement.

Conceived as a seamless projection mapping design with full gesture responsive interactivity, “Dream-e-escape” invites the audience to actively enter the heart of the piece creating and choosing dreamlands that unfold across a series of immersive interactive scenarios, capturing the surreal nature of dreams and giving the audience agency. Dream-e-scape plays as a fictional dimension, whose terrain of forests, cities, galaxies, mountains, and an underworld can be visited only through a process of thinking creatively, Lucid dreaming.

The gaze is a visual poem, gravitational Qualia: anxiety shaped into Surrealism, mythology, a nightmare turned fantasy, spontaneous solidarity, feelings of solitude, suspension, an embrace, the beginning of a smile, a hand falling and rising again, time and the fates.

Conceived as an immersive projection mapping design using cinematographic language and interactive dramaturgy, “Qualia” explores concepts of mental states, symbolism, and hope, creating a story that unfolds across a series of immersive scenarios drawing from the body, faces, urban patterns, nature and remains of activity. Underneath these mirrored imageries lie many stories about limits, freedom and self-perception.

An ordinary tableau becomes a dreamscape, the brain is an airport, a train rail. The mind is a magician, the body is the self, giving audience an alternative experience where they are no longer passive spectators and actively enter the very heart of the piece where ‘universal time’ continues to exist in parallel with an inner perception of time — a back door — intimately associated with our sense of personal identity and unshakable condition that the future is still open to our chosen actions.

The brain is an alchemist where memories are the bedrock of consciousness.

The piece uses choreographic language, fragmentation, bioart, color, motion, music, drama, humor, light and darkness to confound expectations, dream-like scenes and symbolic images, flattening space through animation and abstraction, or heightening the illusion of three dimensions.

The immersive experience - environmental video sculpture - is designed as a large wall with white canvases spread across, seemingly in random positions creating video spaces. Using the concept of ideasthesia, a bridge that metaphorically links rational abstractions, we open a dialogue between the different film streams - within the canvases and throughout the wall - with an original music score and sound design, extending the installation in time and space.

A compassionate and witty take on the classic Grimm fairytale, Allerleirauh is the story of a genius architect who is forced to flee her homeland to protect her blind daughter. Disguised as beggars, they find work in the kitchens of a neighboring castle. With the help of a grumpy cook, a vegetarian king and an outrageous cast of characters, The Builder finds within herself the strength to face the cost of her mistakes and become the mother and queen she was always meant to be.

Directed by Catriona Stevens
Projection design and artwork by Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger
Light design by Matt Steinberg - Choreography by Michael Scannelli
Cast: Adam Barr, Camber Carpenter, Paul Gary, Jeffrey Grover, Zoila N.
Sloomooverse is an interactive web-AR experience. Sloomoo is entering your real world environment (SLAM), and spreading mini-sloomoo in their path. When detecting a sloomooverse (image targets), Sloomoo enters a 3D world which is VR or AR based, where they can interact in different way, swimming their way through an underwater mysterious world of treasures, jumping on the moon surrounded by a magical sky and planets, become an 8bit version of themselves, and poping on tap, in a very 80s videogamish way, enter a psychedelic world where giant mushrooms grow and Sloomoo dances under a kaleidoscopic sky and floor, or enjoys a rain of french fries.
The web-AR contains therefore six experiences in one, and because it is a web-Based AR experience, people don't need to download anything to start experiencing it.
As an added feature, the experience can be photographed or recorded.

Slimey Mirror is an immersive interactive installation which reflect on the self, our identity, and how do we relate to our inner child, when exposed to a different environment where one can see an image of themselves but not quite themselves.
When entering, the interactivity allows for people to see their self as an avatar of slime, responding to one's movement in a mirrored manner, and at the same time responding to the laws of motion of slime. The environment is a cave also made of slime, and it can interact with people by spilling slime of different textures. When prompted by a ball of slime, people can also throw slime at the mirror and at one another.
The experience of reflecting oneself onto a mirror is always a learning experience, here we want people to free themselves from their self-reflection and discover the possibilities of being in a slime body.
The installation works with a full body tracking sensor, and therefor allows to move freely in the space without having to wear any technology. We are looking to create an experience in which people can instinctively interact, with technology invisible.
"Dream-e-scape" is an interactive projection art installation about lucid dreams, created by filmmaker Laia Cabrera and multimedia artist Isabelle Duverger, in collaboration with interactive designer Aniol Saurina Masó and composer and instrumentalist Nana Simopoulos.

The piece is an immersive and interactive 360º installation about the mind and the search for awareness in which the public experiences a sensory voyage that captures the surreal nature of dreams, where the line is blurred between the physical and the digital world, between the real and the imaginary.

“Dream-e-scape” is based on the state of sleep, an imaginary journey one can experience with the eyes wide open. The piece explores the concept of Lucid Dream, the state in which we are asleep and become aware we are dreaming, and the ability we have to control the dreams, the agency we have over our thoughts and desires. We are testing reality, are we awake?
"In a world in which one is tempted to forget or ignore too much, the reconquest of our collective past should be among our first projects for our future.” Umberto Eco
Close-Up/Primer Pla: An Immersive Cinematic Art Installation is a poem to Catalan landscape and architecture, a visual tone poem that uncovers new parallels between identifiable motifs of the land and the built environment, between nature and art. The tale it weaves navigates between gentle familiar territory and sudden, revelatory estrangement, spanning both distant memory and nostalgia for what is yet to come.
Conceived as a visual narrative memoir, looking back and looking forward, a filmic poem of future nostalgia and selective memory. Capturing the instant, going back to the origin, a memory in act.
The piece departs from three major themes for the visual storytelling: Place + People + Values.
Unveiling a sensorial “viatge” as a “spiral”, we created an oneiric journey merging and juxtaposing the essence of these thematic concepts as a triptych video installation. With a cinematic style, using mathematic patterns in nature like spiral, fractals, voronoi, the symbolic tradition of Castells, the textures and shapes of modern architectural landscapes of Catalunya; a visual storytelling materializing thoughts, allegories, scenic metaphors and imaginary skylines. Our focus was also on the rituals of togetherness and solidarity, images of embrace and openness of a community.
The gaze is on the details, the poetry, the beauty of the senses and the longing for an inclusive and sustainable future. A path forward – unveiled through collective traditions and multiculturalism.

"Within Reach" is an cinematic interactive art installation about transformation, reconnecting with the origin, nature and our relationship to it, created by filmmaker Laia Cabrera and visual artist Isabelle Duverger in collaboration with interactive designer Aniol Saurina Masó and composer Nana Simopoulos.

“Within Reach” is a public art installation in a private space.
You can experience the installation and transform it without having to touch anything, and you can interact freely while following the social distancing guidelines. That way, we were making possible art in times of COVID-19!
Also, one of our desire was to make the video installation visible from outside, so at night fall and all night, it is visible from the street... and during the day until 10pm, while still being visible from outside, people can come inside and interact with it.

Conceived as a seamless projection mapping design with gesture responsive interactivity, “Within Reach” invites the audience to actively enter the heart of the piece creating a story that unfolds across a series of immersive interactive scenarios. The installation is a sensory experience thought the elements, from the earth to the skies, from liquid shapes to seeds and visual metaphors, and the principle of change and transformation, where the line is blurred between the physical and the digital world, between the real and the imaginary.

Walk Through a Digital Wall of Nature and Mirrors in This Interactive Art Installation.

Thanks to this new interactive projection art installation, Within Reach, you can become a shape-shifting digital self inside the Art Wall at Coolvines Powerhouse. Only, instead of your image, it reveals an ephemeral body of swirling bubbles, shape of leaves, grains of barley and coffee, and moving particles.

We are far, minuscule, looking from above, but we are actors, actively morphing and shaping what we see. The sea is moving the trees, from the molecules to the exploration of nature and its fruits. “Within Reach” explores the soul of nature, it’s quietness and its power, fertility trough avatars being the fruits and seeds to the infinitesimal and the microscopic on a journey of landscapes and its enchanting beauty. The human presence is only visible at the beginning at gen end as a minuscule glimpse of looking at the skies, where coffee grains and bubbles are rain on our dreams.

Once you enter the installation space, a digital reflection of yourself appears in different shapes, textures and forms, and will follow your every move, transforming the projections-visuals as well. Place yourself in front and start waving or moving to see your mirrored image-avatar on the wall. The audience can affect change, create an avatar of themselves and discover ways to interact with the installation, embody the different storylines and share the experience with each other.

Art Wall Coolvines Powerhouse, 350 Warren Street with Morgan Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302
(2-min walk from PATH train stop Grove Street)
Until October 14, 12pm-Noon to 10pm to interact with the installation (visible as a video installation from outside from 12:00noon to 5:00am)

2010, Essex County, NJ. When Denitra loses the charter school lottery for her daughter, she must find another way to escape from their underperforming neighborhood school. The answer seems like a risk well worth taking, but may end up requiring a bigger sacrifice than she ever could have imagined. Set over a half-century after Brown Versus The Board of Education, LINES IN THE DUST questions how far we've come and more importantly, where we go from here. (Luna Stage Commission)

What is real? What is imaginary? Is the distinction just in our mind?
“Illusion” is an immersive interactive installation about the art
of seeing and experiencing, that offers the chance to step into an
illusion of infinite space.

Illusion - An Immersive Interactive Cinematic Art Installation created by Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger
Interactivity by Aniol Saurina Masó | Music and Sound design by Nana Simopoulos with Mary Ann McSweeney
Flutter Experience, 217 S La Brea, Los Angeles, CA - June 1 to December 1, 2019

The
piece departs from the notion of “visual illusions”, a powerful means
by which to challenge our mind and the inner and subjective approach to
time and space. Through projection mapping, mirrors, augmented reality,
interactivity, video art, music and animation, we invite our audience to
experience a sensorial journey onto magical realms and
thought-provoking realities. “Illusion” is a mirage, a playful art
installation that blurs the line between true and false, merging the
physical and digital worlds.

In “Illusion”, we are
creating a sense of proximity with elements we are used to be surrounded
by, contrasting with how differently we relate to them. We are
awakening the senses as the audience plays with fire, water, energy,
switching viewpoint from being inside to being above, transitioning to
breaking walls (symbolically and literally), opening doors to unexpected
landscapes, from the universe to the infinitesimal and interacting at
all time with them. "Illusion" is an experiential art installation where
mirrors also play the role of breaking the rules of gravity.

In
this infinity mirrored room, one can travel from an animated urban
landscape, breaking walls to unleash the beauty and power of nature, sea
waves, forest and fireflies, a peaceful escape room to aerial views of
the Mediterranean coast, paint and ink creating abstract forms that
evoke the connection between micro and macro, neons that react to your
movements creating shapes, and words that remind us about the meaning of
illusion, a mirage but also a trill and hope.
"Outer
and Inner space in Illusion. Don't miss such amazing artists as Laia
Cabrera, Isabelle Duverger & Aniol Saurina Maso in Illusion..." - Ivan Mena Tinoco, film director and producer

"Digital
media duo Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger offer Illusion, a space
flooded with projections and mapping systems, carving shadows in bubbly
or fire patterns that move in sync with the viewer. “We think it’s
important to bring storytelling to the art world and make it more
attractive and try to have a journey,” says Cabrera who, with Duverger,
was behind similar interactive projections at New York’s Armory Week as
well as a 72 foot long installation on the windows of the Port Authority
Bus Terminal in Times Square last fall." - Jordan Riefe, Art & Object, June 10, 2019
est une expérience limite, entre voyage sensoriel et labyrinthe

"Nimbus Dance Works announces the ninth year of the company's annual holiday tradition: Jersey City Nutcracker. Jersey City Nutcracker
tells the story of two children's urban holiday adventure leading them
through fantasy, adversity and celebration and teaching them lessons
about friendship and community along the way. Choreographed and directed
by Nimbus Artistic Director Samuel Pott, this adaption of Tchaikovsky's
holiday classic is performed by a stand-out cast of professional
dancers from Nimbus Dance Works joined by youth and adults from the
community as they portray familiar characters such as the Sugar Plum
Fairy, the Rat King, and Drosselmeyer - all with a Jersey City twist!
Amidst colorful sets, costumes, a brightly adorned tree, youth and
adults alike are touched by this tale of Christmas spirit. This
year’s performances feature an exciting new component: video mapping
and projection design by award-winning video artists Laia Cabrera &
Isabelle Duverger."
The now:
The Now, created by talented filmmakers and video artists Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger
through videoart, animation, video mapping and interactivity, in collaboration with interactivity artists NoirFlux and Karan Parikh, is the first featured art presentation at Coolture Impact and the largest interactive public art installation (72 feet long - 22m.) on the windows of the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Times Square.
The now offers a journey into magical worlds, intertwining reality and fantasy, opening doors to hidden places and participatory environments. The Now explores transitory spaces and unseen parallel realities, in a cinematic voyage to visually striking realms, live painting, and animated characters with evolving narratives. Visitors are invited to walk, move and unravel the different storylines.

Artist Statement:
"In this peculiar place of transit, where people come and go in a rush, we wanted to create a piece that would allow them to stop, explore and travel to different magical, poetic and imaginary places, and while interacting with the piece, allow the audience to interact with each other, be in the present.
As a result, we tried to allow new technology to be as accessible as possible. This installation is unique and was created specifically with a combination of complex technologies, but with the desire of making it as seamless and approachable to anyone who interacts with it.
As we created the piece, we thought of where it was presented, and of course, being a transportation hub, we though of transporting people to imaginary world, opening doors of a Subway, an Electric Bus and a 1920’s train who wouldn't breath out smoke but butterflies, our personal winks to Climate Change and our concern about it.
We hope you will find the time to see it, it is intended as to be as immersive and imaginative as possible, surrounded by all the flat screens of Times Square, and an attempt to contribute with public art in a over-saturated place of advertising." — Laia Cabrera & Isabelle Duverger
Jersey City Theater Center (JCTC) presents Trojan Women, a modern multimedia and multilingual adaptation of the classic Greek tragedy by Euripides, directed by Olga Levina, JCTC's Artistic Director.
A foreign army marches through the defeated city of Troy. They destroy every vestige of civilization left after a brutal war. They’ve slaughtered the men and captured the women, whom they brutally assault and separate from their children. Will the only survivors of Troy be massacred as well? Will the women be forced into marriage or slavery by their conquerors or will they be made to live like refugees in their devastated city, subject to the whims and desires of the occupying soldiers?
Trojan Woman is that rare work of literature that has gained more power and relevance with time... JCTC’s production of Trojan Women highlights women's strength, wisdom and compassion and is meant to spark a conversation about the ways “the others” are dehumanized through prejudice, oppression and violence in society. For thousands of years, men have fought wars, but women endure the aftermath, binding the wounds, mopping up the blood and stitching civilization back together. JCTC has brought diverse team of artists from multiple arts disciplines and cultural backgrounds to create Trojan Women for 21st century audiences.
Directed and filmed by Laia Cabrera, the piece is based on an original idea by Catherine Correa in collaboration with awarded choreographer Alexandre Proia. The piece features two actors/dancers Catherine Correa and
Jonathan Royse Windham with production design and visual effects by
"Shifting Gaze" is a film-art-music installation about choice, desire
and memory conceived and directed by Laia Cabrera (filmmaker and video
artist) and created in collaboration with Erica Glyn (music, composer
and singer) and Isabelle Duverger (animation and mapping). Shifting Gaze
is a film about identity, about making choices, a memory in act.
Drawing from the body, faces, urban patterns, nature and remains of
activity, the piece explores a notion of choice, linked to desire and
memory –choice being the present, memory representing the past and
desire, the drive for a future. Underneath these mirrored imageries lie
many stories about limits, freedom and self-perception.
"Several
other exhibitions were visually compelling or inventive, or so fully
realized that I couldn’t help but spend the necessary time to suss out
their meanings. The show Self on the Shelf
was one of those technology-driven extravaganzas, when I touched a black
dot on a quotidian furnishing in what was designed to look like a
bedroom, the whole scene shifted and music and images wafting across the
walls made me feel like by touching the button, I had entered a
wormhole."
Another unforgettable stop was “Self on the Shelf”, an Immersive Interactive Video Art installation by Laia Cabrera & Isabelle Duverger curated by Christine Miele. For this year’s Spring Break they turned a small boy’s bedroom into “a nightmarish dreamscape in honor of the eponymous elf which has become the symbol of our children’s intimate acceptance of 21st century surveillance realities” as the statement describes.
Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger have a long successful history of transforming spaces with their immersive interactive projection mapping, video art, sound design, illustration and animation, all designed from scratch by them. Their robust career includes theatre scenery, cinema, cultural events and of course, exhibitions, to mention a few. For ‘Self on the Shelf’ they collaborated with interaction designer Nicola Carpeggiani in response to ‘A stranger comes to town’ exploring the conflicts of otherness and the nature of belonging, by bringing the child’s bedroom to life while the space reacts to the visitors’ actions.
Both artists and curator converse with the audience, and explain the piece’s origin as they are all inundated by the ongoing dramatic visual effects transform the space blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. Extracted from a 2012 journal entry about Chris’ son and his relationship with James, his first Elf on the Shelf, the concept of this stranger from the North Pole was born.
“Spring Break art show is a very unique art fair in the sense that it is organized around one theme, this year being “Stranger comes to Town” based on the adage “There are only two stories: a hero goes on a journey; a stranger comes to town”. Through the exploration of trust and belief, mystery, and childhood, we wanted to explore the role a stranger may play in conjunction with a power dynamic through the lens of a child. The room, reminiscent of a child’s bedroom, is transported through memories, emotions, and experiences via projected mapping, film, video, sound, animation and visual art.
It’s a spectacle on itself to observe the audience interact with the room, decipher where to touch and observe the visual effects, as well as the story behind them. Children and adults, or artists and the general audience all move around the space with a different approach and reactions. ‘In this context, our site specific installation was very labor intensive once getting into the space, and we’ve worked successfully around the clock to provide the visitors the best experience of our interactive video and sound installation.” Undoubtedly this particular booth is a trip on itself, making the rest of the environment temporarily disappear and becoming a door to an alternate universe.
I leave the fair still believing in the real relevance of art. Thank you Spring Break Art Show for keeping us sane through art-supermart season.
“Self on The Shelf” by Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger. Curated by Christine Miele.

"Self
on The Shelf was a distinct departure from the installations and room
presentations that dominated the fair. Presenting as a child's bedroom,
the work was enlivened through the act of finding and pressing a black
button to present a series of changing environment that combined a
childlike innocence with adult self-examination that didn't scour. In an
unexpected twist, the work contained a live projection component so
participates could see themselves appear on the walls as part of the art
installation. It's all part of the dreamlike environment and secret
places that is more nice than not.
Self on The Shelf was dreamed
up by a pair of visual artists with skills in projected mapping, film,
video, animation and visual art. Experiencing the installation was not
nearly as complicated as the list of skills needed to create the
fanciful work. The work is inspired by a childhood toy by the curator's
son. His "Elf on the Shelf" was a toy that was a stand in for Santa
Claus and, as part of his Christmas team, could report back on whether
he was naughty or nice to determine the level of gifts delivered on
Christmas Eve.
The Self on The Shelf can transform into both
sweet dreams or nightmares where elves take over the room or storms
envelop the room. Other actions will create the room to transform into a
pool, a drawing that unfolds or to place the visitor in the room as way
of looking themselves in the mirror.
Overall, the installation was a fun breathe in an art fair with work that could be heavy on the heart or harsh on the eyes."
In 'Self On The Shelf', filmmaker and videoartist Laia Cabrera and animator and video mapper Isabellle Duverger will co-create an interactive immersive installation for Spring Break Art Show, as part of the Armory Arts Week, turning a small boy's bedroom into a nightmarish dreamscape in honor of the eponymous elf which has become the symbol of our children's intimate acceptance of 21st century surveillance realities.
Through immersive interactive projection mapping, video art, illustration and animation, Laia Cabrera and Isabelle Duverger, in collaboration with interaction designer Nicola Carpeggiani, will create a child's bedroom and bring it to life as it responds to a series of clues or hints, which will be given to visitors as they enter the room.
Extracted from a 2012 journal entry about Chris' son and his relationship with James, his first Elf on the Shelf, the concept of this stranger from the North Pole was born. The dramatic visual effects will transform the room as the viewer explores feelings, emotions and limits between reality and fantasy.
